Jeff Bezos 1: The electricity metaphor for the web’s future (transcript)
Summary
Over ten years have passed since the speaker who is Jeff Bezos told us the story. The Amazon. com is his company, would it grow up as he expected? Probably, No, he wouldn’t. It's because he always thinks that he and his company are still at an early stage. It means that his services are used by many people though they still have room for improvement. He explains us this thought by using electricity metaphor.
When there was no light in world houses in the past, the wires connected the light bulb to each house. Due to not thinking about other appliances, all the streets had to be torn up and home appliances started spreading. The electric fan, the iron, and the vacuum were big successes. There were some failures though some electric appliances like the toaster and the washing machine were again big successes. Everyone wanted to plug in a new appliance. Its wires are connected to your light bulb before.
Now, everyone wants to use the internet which can connect through the long-distance phone network. The web was lucky because extensive infrastructure had already been laid down, it's recorded 2,300 percent growing. Then people say that the growing is stopped, but the web innovation can occur from now again. It's not gone like gold.
Like the TV and the micro weave create a big wave again, the web, he and his company are very early, they see a different big future.
