My escape from North Korea

TED
Hyeonseo Lee: My escape from North Korea
Summary
The speaker Hyeonseo Lee is Korean. She was very proud of her own country, North Korea where she was born. As her family was not poor, she didn't know that people in her country were suffering. When a huge famine hit in North Korea, she was sent to China separately with her family. It was hard for her to live in China, because North Korean refugees were considered in China as illegal migrants. Some of them seek asylum though many were caught and repatriated to North Korea. They could be tortured, imprisoned, or publicly executed. If her identity could be revealed, she would have those similar experience also. She continued hiding it for 10 years but she decided to risk going to South Korea. Although people who live there were all Koreans the same as her, there was a wide gap between North and South. She didn't have her identity. She, then, had to travel to help her family. Her family was arrested several times for illegal border crossing during travel. She spent her money to help them though her money gave out.
At that time, a miracle occurred. A complete stranger paid the rest of money to help them. He said that he was not helping her, he was helping the North Korean people.
This is the true meaning of helping someone without expecting anything in return.  I wonder where such a person came from and how he received the education.
She has gotten freedom to live but she continues fighting. It means that many Korean people are still suffering like her. She realized that a miracle which the stranger helped the North Korean people is that she has to do. It show her grateful feelings and become the rays of hope. It might change North Korea. Her identity came back in her.
Again, I knew that North Korea, South Korea, China and Japan are the same Asian countries though there are a lot of differences that I didn't know and I cannot be learned in the textbooks for the schools. Incidentally, I think that it is good for me to know this story in English  which the speaker spoke. It is because I could feel that she is the person who's studying English like the same as me. If I read it in Japanese characters, I would not keep it in mind.

Best Tool to Teach Baby Talk? Their Parents' Voice

VOA
Best Tool to Teach Baby Talk? Their Parents' Voice
Summary
This time, how electronic toys affect children was studied in the Arizona University.
The result showed that they're not helping children learn. It is because parents talked lesser with their children when children play with electronic toys than traditional toys, or when children look at books.
Children start learning a language  based on what they hear from parents.
To share and talk with children are important things that parents should do like reading a book.
Playing electronic toys is not bad, but it is better for children to speak more, even if they play electronic toys. It is important that parents make time to play with their children.
Discussion
1.What do you think about educational toys for children?
I think that giving electronic toys will be self-worth for adults. Companies have to sell those to get profit.  Parents don't have or make enough time to be with their children instead of they will give those to the children.
2.Why do you think it is important for parents to talk to their babies?
This article says that children develop their language quicly based on what they hear from parents. To share and talk with children are important things that parents should do like reading a book to them.
3.Do you like children? Do you enjoy being in their company?
Yes, I do. I like children who are honest. They talk about something that they hear and feel. If children aren't honest, that goes the same way to their mother parents. There is a Japanese proverb: Children are faithful reflections of their parents. (Your parent's attitude tells you who you are.)
Yes, I do. I like my job. When children find our company products which are flag keychains, they always start asking what country those flag belong with joy. Seeing those joyful faces makes us happy.

New US Food Advice Not to Everyone’s Taste

VOA
New US Food Advice Not to Everyone’s Taste
Summary
The new nutritional guidelines are issued by the U.S. government.
However, we must take care of cholesterol in-takethemselves. It is because the guidelines don't recommend avoiding cholesterol for our health but the recommendation won't lead to a decline in foods sales.
It is suggested that it is good to recommend eating more fruits, vegetables and nuts than animal protein and sodium. However, it will be bat for people to be able to eat as many eggs as they like each day, it will lead to taking in cholesterol too much.
Further, it won't be good not to recommend that breakfast is necessary also. It seems that there is a misunderstanding about the positive reports of how coffee decreases the risks of diabetes and Parkinson’s disease.
This is suggested to be censored information. If it took the whole  new recommendations, it would lead to unnecessary premature deaths, diabetes or etc. It will be important that individuals should eat as little dietary cholesterol as possible.
Discussion
1.What kind of foods do you usually eat in a day?
I usually eat vegetable and tofu (bean curd) made from soy beans. Rice is a staple food for Japanese people. However, recently many people have eaten bread in stead of rice. I also eat rice and bread though I eat vegetable more than those. It is because I know it is healthy for me.
2.Have you tried making any changes with your diet? What changes have you made in your diet?
Yes, I have. When I don't have time to cook, I often eat bread and sandwich. However, I heard that eating too much wheat is not good for our health. Further, bread contains a lot of sugar which is also not good. That's why, I try to eat vegetable.
I want to change my habit of drinking too much coffee. It is because I heard that drinking too much caffeine is not good as well. However, I drink countless cups of coffee every day especially during work.
3.Why do you think it is important to eat healthy foods?
Foods you had makes up your body. Losing your health leads to some diseases. It will even give another cost in curing.
In my opinion, it is important not to eat too much of something more  than  healthy foods. In the market, companies have  to sell a lot of their delicious foods even if some ingredients which are not good for our body are used . We must take care of it ourselves.

Discussion
1.Do you have a similar expression in your language?
Yes, I think that in my language Japanese, we have some similar expressions. However, I don't have ideas what the most similar one is. I feel it is a bit different. For example, diligent application or friendly competition (sessatakuma) means that they improved themselves through friendly rivalry.

2.What is the good point of living a life in the fast lane? What is the bad point?
The good point of living a life in the fast lane is that their life is a very active. They like exciting experience like a party or finding their next big thrill
The bad thing is, it's a selfish way to live. They might drink a lot of alcohol or use other drugs. They don't think about how their lifestyle may affect them or how it may affect others.
3.Do you enjoy driving? How long can you drive?
No, I don't. I don't have a car now. However, if this driving is part of my life, then my answer is yes. Now, my life is full of movement, excitement and action. I am not living in rich. Though I don't have enough money, I still enjoy working, studying and also love.

This is what it's like to go undercover in North Korea

TED
Suki Kim: This is what it's like to go undercover in North Korea
Summary
The speaker is Suki Kim who was born and raised in South Korea and she currently lives in America. She has been to North Korea and is interested in its country and regime. She wanted to know and write something, the true meaning of this country.
She had stayed there as an English teacher. For North Koreans, everything led to the Great Leader, Kim ll-Sung and Kim Jong-Il. Every class and conversation were recorded and reported on. The teacher and students were never allowed to discuss the outside world. The students didn't know the existence of the internet though their major was science and technology. They were taught lies. This nation's ideology, their day-to-day realities and even her own position at the universities, were all built on lies.
Due to that, she felt that them lying was a mistake. They answered things that were only taught to them. They just obeyed.
She really wanted to tell them that, but it wasn't allowed.
However, sometimes they looked alike other world students.
Then, her students said to her, "we never think of you as being different from us. Our circumstances are different, but you're the same as us. We want you to know that we truly think of you as being the same."
She realized that they were just not able to express their feelings. They didn't have the way to tell anything. She also never told anything to them.
They didn't have a choice to tell anything, but they might know something. it's becauese people become good at reading what is unspoken when they are not allowed to express anything in the open.
It's not able to conform but ask anything to each other.Even if it becomes possible, it just puts them at risk.
In the last part, her thoughts were written on her letter which never reached. "I don't know it is good for you to be gentle in there. I don't want you to lead a revolution. Even if North Korea is the merciless country, it's your home. I cannot hate it. I hope you live long in safety and you will make your country beautiful. "
◆Viewpoints and Discussion
1. Which part in the video are you interested with?
By chance, I heard this speech. Somehow, I was deeply moved, and the speaker Suki Kim whose English was easy for me to hear. I think that she is Korean who is the same Asian people to me.
I thought, and  people also must think, that people don't want to talk about North Korea, because it is the country where it is strange, scary and hard to understand. It will be too difficult to talk, but she speaks fair but it is TED stage.
First, she wanted to know and write about the North Korean truth. However, her thoughts changed. She honestly talked that. Even though she could know that, it might lead her students to a revolution. Even if North Korea is the merciless country, it's their home. She could not hate it. I realized she really loves her students and the country is important for citizen living in there.
North Korea, South Korea and Japan are the same Asian countries though there is a lot difference that you are not able to learn in the textbooks for the schools.
2. Do you have any idea about North Korea? If yes, kindly share your ideas.
No, I don't have a good idea. Recently, some bad news was announced from North Korea. However, I think that there might be a little hope more than past. It is because North Korean leader Kim Jong UN is still young. I heard that he learned many things in the other countries. In my opinion, he might be able to change his own country and he will think that also.
3. Which do you think is better for young people in North Korea to lead a revolution or to have a solemn and peaceful life?
I think that it is better for young people in North Korea to have a solemn and peaceful life.
4. Could you share any idea that you know about the different lives of people in different area of the world.
No,I couldn't. I strongly thought that we couldn't share any idea by hearing this speech and studying English again. It is because learning countries' history and languages are really deep. I feel that the differences of the historical awareness appear among countries in the world the more I study. However, all countries have to overcome the problems and corporate each other.

Remember to say thank you

TED 2008
Laura Trice: Remember to say thank you  (video, script)
Summary
The speaker Laura Trice could feel shy and embarrassed to say thank you, praise someone or receive praise from someone.
A certain person doesn't know that a person wants to hear praise directly, even though he/she tells everyone else that he/she is proud of that person. A person who wants to hear praise doesn't ask why he/she never say that.
Otherwise, there is a person who tells thank you to someone thinks why he/she has to say that. The speaker realized that she asked someone to praise her, that was to show her weakness.
Unconsciously, she thought that she should not give someone some her data and she blocked to ask and say it.
However, there is something wrong a bit with this. This small warp is fixed, that must say thank you, praise you and ask you to praise her. It is to be hoest.
First, you appreciate someone who is around you. And tell that no one might say a beautiful word to you to praise. It is important to praise and say thank you with all your heart.
◆Viewpoints&Discussion
1.Have you ever asked others to praise you?  If you have, please tell what you did at that time or  if you haven’t, please move on to no.2
Yes, I have. I supposed not to ask, but I have asked. I like my work. Work is fun, but it is often tough. Although the work is hard, we can still get salary.  However, I wanted to hear thank you. This is great and really good job from the employer.  I asked her like this story that it is important to say that thank you. Additionally, I said if she doesn't think that, she should say that.  She said," I paid salary. It is not necessary to say that."  I was depressed and I thought that I didn't want to be like her.
2.What is the most “admirable behavior” in your life?
I don't have a special admirable behavior. On my end, I can only continue this work. Work is sometimes hard and tough. Many customers rejecte my offer. However, I want our company product to be known by many people. I believe that this is the most “admirable behavior” in my life.
3.Who is the person you want to praise most now?
My mother is the person I want to praise most now. She was very strict to me but this was not the reason I didn't listen to what she said. Somehow, I did something that she didn't think. Now, I am an adult. I think that it is hard to raise children. She wanted to hear thank you from my father, however, my father thought that it is not necessary like this story. I heard that many times from her. By reading this, I really think that I have to say thank you to my mother.

slave / a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them.
Discussion
1. Are there any useful rhyming words in your language like nitty-gritty?
I think that there are some rhyming words in Japan though I am sorry I didn't know well. Anyway, I wrote it. What about this? Syusya means rejection and adoption.
I know that in Japan there are many useful repitition (reduplication) words. For example, dandan means gradually.
2. When dealing with the problem, do you always get down to the nitty-gritty?
Yes, I do. I always try to get down to the nitty-gritty when dealing with a problem. Sometimes in a meeting, people begin telling many things that are only beneficial for them. Therefore, the meeting will take longer and the agenda will not be dealt accordingly. It is important to know the nitty-gritty of the things.

A life lesson from a volunteer firefighter

TED
Mark Bezos: A life lesson from a volunteer firefighter
Summary
This story is really cool. The speaker Mark Bezos is working as a volunteer firefighter. You can imagine that he is a hero because a fireman must meet chances which he goes into a burning building to save a living person so he could be a person with a history. He also thought that. However, when he got a chance in fire to save someone, the offer he received was not to help someone  but to bring  a  pair of shoes.
In reality, no one knows when a big offer to save someone comes though you must not wait to come such big chances. Even if it comes, the result you expect  might be the opposite though that doesn't matter. Right now, giving something you have is important. Those are small grace and courage on an individual basis that you should have, enough to affect someone. Don't wait. Go and try.
◆Viewpoints&Discussion
1.Have you ever volunteered in your community? Please explain further.
Yes, I have. In my previous apartment, we had to clean the garbage area ourselves. I took part in that on Sundays. Although it was sometimes hard, it was comfortable after cleaning.
2.In what way will you show kindness to others?
To hear someon's stories well will become familiar.
To say thank you and to greet are also important.
Don't do something that you don't want to be done by someone.
(If you listen to others, you will be able to know them deeper. Greeting and thanking are important as well. Don't do something that you don't want to be done to you.)
3.Have you ever saved “someone else’s shoes”?
Yes, I have. I think that most of the work is that. In the company or market, there are many people who entered there earlier than me.  They have alrady experienced  a lot of works. Further, the seniority system  works  strongly in Japan. They are in a beneficial position, even if I give good ideas faster than them. However, I have to continue working. Most important thing was to make the custmoers happy.

Questions Raised on N. Korea’s Claim of Hydrogen Bomb Test
Summary
North Korea announced that a hydrogen bomb was tested continuously in 2013. The blast which was not the natulal earthquake was observed near the border with China where the site of previous North Korean nuclear tests happened. They claimed that the test was a self-defensive measure to thoroughly protect their nation’s autonomy. It has been 2.5 times more powerful than Hiroshima. However, South Korea said that it was not the powerful explosion. South Korea and Japan condemned the test.  It was not able to confirm the test was true or not, because it might give provocation to North Korea, said the U.S.
Discussion
1.What do you think about North Korea testing a bomb?
I think that showing to have a hydrogen bomb is different the country is strong. The country must cooperate with other countries of the world.  At least  I think that it should be stopped to do damage or injuries to other countries.
2.What could be the effect if a hydrogen bomb explode?
A hydrogen bomb explode must be scary. Many people will die or become ill.  The place where the bomb occur will become uninhabitable for a long time.
3.What do you think about North Korea as a country?
North Korean leader Kim Jong UN is still young. I heard that he learned many things in the other countries.  In my opinion,  he might be able to change his own country without giving damage to other countries.
I think that it is different in historical awareness.  North Korea and South Korea learn that Japan is their enemy but Japanese has never learned that. Japan was defeated by World War Ⅱ. Each country will have some bad history. It is important to study our real history though it must not be used for hating other countries and doing damage or injuries.

Physical therapy is a process of doing a suite of repetitive exercises in order to regain the range of movement lost due to an accident or injury. It is very important for patients though it is boring and painful. It takes a long time to get a better result. They lack the motivation to do it but they don't do their exercises, therefore, it takes a lot longer to get better.  The speaker thought it wouldn't be interesting if patients could play their way to recovery. Then, he developed a software with geeks and his physical therapist. It can transform traditional exercises into video games  through a motion capture camera or etc. It can easily and happily gives patients a good motivation to do exercise and it is very customizable also. Now, the games are used in some clinics. By using it and following this treatment way, patients will get better earlier.

Plant Your Mobile Charger in the Dirt

VOA
Plant Your Mobile Charger in the Dirt
Summary
The device which changes the energy released from the plant into the low-level power to charge mobile phones was developed by university students in Santiago. This invention is a small biological circuit called E-Kaia. It collects the energy which plants produce during photosynthesis.  It plugs into the ground and then into a mobile phone by using an outlet to plug. It doesn't take over two hours to fully recharge.
Discussion
1.What do you think about this new invention?
I think that this is a great invention. Typically, girls students are told they are not good in science. However, for me these girls and great.  Girls  always want to use SNS through the mobile phone than boys. They have to charge their mobile phone anytime and anywhere, therefore this idea lead to this invention.
2.How do you usually save power on your mobile phone?
I use my mobile phone only when necessary, because it is expensive. The energy has to be saved and I feel that I using  SNS is a waste time. I don't play games by useing tablet or  mobile phone. I don't watch YouTube.
3.What was your greatest science project when you were a student?
When I was an lementary school student, in our class, our greatest science project was to observe the growth of the sunflowers. In Japan, if you sow seeds of  sunflowers in the spring, it will bloom in the summer.
It was sowed with different conditions which were to water it every day or not, to be sowed in the shade or not, and in the big yard or in the small planters.
We recorded those observations every day. I was surprised with the clear result. In the shady small planters, small sunflowers bloomed.  However, big sunflowers bloomed where its taller than me in the big yard.
We felt that the plants had strong life functions.

Got a meeting? Take a walk

TED
Nilofer Merchant: Got a meeting? Take a walk
Summary
People will think they cannot change their convention of daily life  or they do not need to change it. If they want to change it they have to come at the cost of the other. However, getting out of the box, if you have this thinking, it might be easy for you to change your life.  Having a little  different viewpoint or holding problems in opposition lead to change for framework of thinking. It will bring fresh air, thinking and new good ideas. Walking and talking are different things, but it will apply to that.

It means unconventional. Not to follow usual, traditional, or conventional thoughts.

Weird, or just different?

TED
Derek Sivers: Weird, or just different?
I was very surprised because the speaker knows about Japan very well and he greeted the end in Japanese, that's why I chose this article.
Summary
When you have or hear something which you think that it is not true or strange, that may be the ideas you only just don't know or realize that it is true and the opposite. So the speaker recommends for you to think that the opposite may be true.  It will make you a bit happy.
See my right side!, the sun is rising! However, we are sitting face to face. The sun is rising from your left side.
◆Viewpoints&Discussion
1. Are you open enough to accept ideas that are opposite to yours?  Please explain your answer.
I don't know, because I want to know the idea well before I accept it.  It sometimes needs to discuss or takes for a long time. It doesn't mean for me not to accept all opposite ideas immediately, but other people must think I don't open enough to accept ideas that is opposite to mine.
2. Did you ever find yourself in the middle of an argument due to having opposite ideas? Please explain your answer.
No, I didn't, because an argument or opposite ideas around me are only to seek benefits or be able to explain something well.  I love something to realize or to think opposite ideas. When I realize a good idea such like the speaker told us, it makes me very happy. However, it doesn't come in the middle of an argument.
No, I didn't, because an argument or opposite ideas around me are only to seek benefits or not accept my idea or if someone explains things beneficial to all.  I love realizing or thinking the opposite ideas. When I realize a good idea such like the speaker told us, it makes me feel very happy. However, it doesn't come in the middle of an argument.
3. When can you consider an idea to be brilliant?
After the discussion, I can  often realize an idea to be brilliant. It means that it is important to discuss the idea but I don't realize an idea to be brilliant under discussion. After that, when the discussion will be summraized in my brain and I will relax, I can consider an idea to be brilliant.
4. Upon reading the article, do you think that the differences we have in the world could stop us from having a good communication or having a good relationship among others?
No, I think that there are the differences we have in the world that's why war or fight will occur. It is very difficult to have a good communication or a good relationship, especially, over the country, race and religion. People won't be able to accept all things.
5. Is it easy for you to acknowledge other people’s ideas? Why or why not?
No, it isn't. People lie and seek only for their own benefits, that's why it is not easy for me to acknowledge other people’s ideas.
6. What are the other customs from other country that you know? Is it good/bad for you? Why?
Although I don't know that it is good or bad, Japanese people bow when they say "Thank you" ("Arigatou Gozaimasita") or "I am sorry" ("Suimasen") However, my English teachers are not Japanese, they don't do that. First, I felt it was strange but it is the custom from another country.

5 Ways Unicef Continues To Make The World A Better Place
The United Nations Children’s Fund called UNICEF established in 1946 for especially in developing countries to help governments improve the health and education of children and their mothers. In recent year, it has improved mortality rate, drinking water sources, and the number of children going to school. However, there are still some problems in the world now. One of them is about Syrian child refugees. This is the big problem though many people don't notice. About that and other health issues, it is important to increase people's awareness. In education, it also has to ensure some resources are being used equally and efficiently, in some areas, climate change is a bad influence for children though it's not known well. UNICEF is running various activities for fundraising. The benefits are used for nutrition, medicine, education, clean water and emergency relief and we must not forget we are responsible for those. By doing something that cannot prepare now for those problems, it will increase something that they can do to prevent themselves. In the future, this famous organization UNICEF will continue working with other organizations, yours and their cooperation to make this world a better place.

Claim your “manspace”

TED
Sam Martin: Claim your “manspace”
Summary
There must be many people especially men who need their own spaces.
The speaker had no choice but to create his own space. It is because he shared his space with his son and felt there is no space of his own. Then, he realezed of his own space. It had everything he needed. It was  quiet and there was enough space . It became a very important space for him that he was able to have control for himself. Then, he researched what other people were creating for their own space and he strongly believed that people who had their own space really loved their professions. They really enjoyed their work, hobbies and collections, and they had passion. Their space were created with attractiveness, it seemed to reflect what they loved to work and their personalities.
◆Viewpoints&Discussion
1. How important is it for you to have your own space?
I think that it is important for me to have my own space to relax alone. Thinking something alone is also important.  I am able to focus many things to do better.  There, I can also study English.
 2. Do you have a space in your house where you usually stay to be relaxed? Which part in your house is it?
Yes, I do. In my house, my bedroom is my own space to be able to spend time and being  relaxed, however it is very small.
My office become my own  good spaces before officemates come and after they go back at home. I can think a lot of things and study English there.
3. Do you value other people’s privacy and you value yours? Why?
I value other people's privacy because I want them to value my privacy too.  To discuss something is important but to think something alone is  more important.  I value  space  and time to be able to do that.

Viola Davis' Emmy Speech Was A Perfect Time To Discuss Racial Inequality

Viola Davis' Emmy Speech Was A Perfect Time To Discuss Racial Inequality
There are many different races in the world. War of independence ended, all people got the vote without regard to race, religion and gender in many countries. We  can now know a lot of things that are happening in the world soon by technology development. We feel that people can connect  each other soon.  However, even if eating the same food, watching the same things, speaking the same language and living in the same regions, the problem of racial inequality still has not been erased.
Viola Davis is a black actress. She has gotten An Emmy Award as the first black woman to receive the honor. Then her speech told us a remaining problem again, but what her prize helped us to change our recognition about to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, and to be black. People who were most encouraged would be all black actresses who are the same to her. Her prize took over the line.
Hope that all people can stand at the same starting line from now.
